Data Recovery for Home Computers

If you are here because photos or documents have gone missing, take a breath. Some of this is recoverable and some of it is not. The honest answer depends on what happened. My name is Bruno. That matters more with lost files than anything else I do. Your computer stays in your home, you can see what is happening to your own files, and you deal with the owner every time.

Stop Before You Do Anything Else

Files are most often lost for good in the hours after they go missing. Every time a drive is used, it can write new data over the thing you want back.

• Stop using the drive right now. Do not save anything to it and do not browse the web on that computer. If it is the main drive, shut the machine down.
• Do not install recovery software onto the affected drive. A tool downloaded onto the same drive can overwrite the files it is meant to rescue. This undoes more recoveries than anything else.
• Do not keep switching a noisy drive on and off. If it clicks, buzzes or grinds, every restart is another chance for real damage.

A physically failing drive gets worse every time it spins up. One readable on Monday can be unreadable by Friday.

The Situations I See

Files deleted by accident

A folder dragged somewhere odd, a card wiped, an emptied recycle bin. Often the best case. The data usually sits there until something is written over it, which is why stopping matters.

The computer will not start, but the drive is fine

Windows or macOS is broken, not the disk. Your files are often still readable and can be copied to an external drive first.

A drive clicking or grinding

This is mechanical failure. Something inside is physically damaged. Software cannot fix it, and running it again can turn a partial loss into a total one.

Water, lightning or storm damage

We get our share of that here. Sometimes the computer is dead but the drive inside survived and reads fine in another machine. Sometimes the drive itself is gone.

A phone, camera card or memory stick

These fail differently to hard drives, and often without warning. Deleted photos are sometimes recoverable if the card has not been used since. A card the computer will not recognize at all is harder.

Files encrypted by ransomware

Your files are still there but scrambled, usually with a note demanding payment. Depending on the variant, decryption may be impossible without the criminals’ key. What is worth checking is whether older copies, backups or cloud versions survived.

When It Needs a Specialist Lab

If a drive has failed mechanically, the only real option is a clean-room recovery lab, where it is opened in a controlled environment by people with the right equipment. I do not have a clean room and will not pretend otherwise. That work is expensive.

What I will do is tell you plainly when that is your situation, so you can decide with real information instead of paying me for something I cannot do. If I do not think recovery is realistic, I will say so up front.

Making the Next One Less Painful

Briefly, because you have had a bad enough day. One copy is not a backup. If your photos exist in one place, a single failure takes them all. Aim for two: an external drive at home, plus a cloud copy that is not on the same desk in a storm.

Phone photos are not automatically safe either. Syncing is only on if someone turned it on, and free storage fills quietly and then stops. Worth checking. Common Questions

Can you always get the files back?

No, and anyone who promises otherwise is not being straight with you. Some losses are fully recoverable, some are partly recoverable, and some are gone. It depends on what failed and what has happened since. I will look and tell you honestly what the odds are.

My drive is making a clicking sound. Should I keep trying it?

No. Turn it off and leave it off. Clicking or grinding means physical damage inside the drive, and every spin-up risks losing more. Repeated attempts are how a partial recovery becomes a total loss. Set it aside and ask before powering it on again.

Do you take my computer away to work on it?

No. I come to your home in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Sarasota, Palmetto or Parrish, and the machine stays with you. You can see what is being done with your own files instead of handing them over a counter and waiting. If a specialist lab is needed, I will explain why.

I deleted photos yesterday and kept using the computer. Is it too late?

Not necessarily, but the odds drop the longer it goes on. Deleted files sit in place until something new is written over them, and ordinary use keeps writing. Stop using that drive now. There is often more recoverable than people assume, so ask first.
